Unfold

A private voice journal I built for my iPhone, to capture my thoughts the way I'd say them. It transcribes each entry and picks out themes and intentions on the phone, with Apple's on-device models. No accounts, no servers, no cloud AI.

Since Oct 18, 2026

Screens

  • Unfold's Record screen: one large microphone button, the line "Say anything. Nothing here is judged.", and "Stays on this iPhone" above the tab bar.Unfold's Record screen: one large microphone button, the line "Say anything. Journal. Every recording is its own entry, with the themes Unfold found.
  • A fictional entry: the transcript with quotes softly highlighted, then a card titled "What Unfold noticed" with themes, two observations and one intention, each an exact quote.A fictional entry: the transcript with quotes softly highlighted, then a card titled "What Unfold noticed" with themes, two observations and one intention, each an exact quote.
An entry. The transcript, then what Unfold noticed, each label an exact quote.

Why I built it

I wanted a journal I could talk to freely, without prompts or having to organize my thoughts before I started. I also wanted to look back and notice patterns in what I'd been saying. I tried other voice journaling apps, but I wasn't comfortable sending such personal thoughts to somebody else's servers.

So I decided to build my own. I'd never made an iPhone app before, and I was curious whether I could. AI helped me get there. I built Unfold for myself, and now I use it on my phone.
